Jack the Ripper Walks

Step back in time and imagine yourself in the London of Jack the Ripper, with its gas-lit alleys and foggy lanes. You will be guided through the centuries-old streets of Whitechapel to six of the original murder sites

In the East End of London, during 1888, there were a series of horrendous murders. At least five (but possibly up to seven) women, all of whom were prostitutes, were horribly murdered and their bodies’ mutilated. The victims had all had their throats and vocal chords cut, presumably in order to stop them screaming for help; they were then all mutilated in a gruesome fashion. This Walk will guide you through the centuries-old streets of Whitechapel, to six of the original murder sites - to where the mutilated bodies of the Ripper’s victims were discovered. You will hear numerous tales about Jack the Ripper and be able to visit the actual taverns that he frequented; these include the oldest tavern in London and the famous Ten Bells Pub where, in 1888, the Ripper’s unfortunate victims drank and worked as prostitutes, and where at least one of the victims was seen drinking with a mysterious man, thought to have been the Ripper himself, less than an hour before being horribly murdered nearby. You will also be given the chance to visit the only Jack the Ripper Exhibition in London.

Also included on the Walk are two of East London’s most famous street markets and the actual buildings where John Merrick, better known as “the Elephant Man” lived, was put on display in a Victorian freak show, and where his remains are still kept today.
