The South Downs Way follows the old routes and droveways along the chalk escarpment and ridges of the South Downs. The undulating route provides a challenging trail, if you are interested in great views, attractive wildlife, fine pubs and pretty villages this is th walk for you, the route offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside, particularly from Beacon Hill. Depending upon the season you choose to walk, birds and wild flowers are in abundance. The South Downs Way makes a good choice for winter walking due to the fast draining chalk. The Way passes through the Sussex Downs and East Hampshire. Starting from Eastbourne the route passes through Alfriston, Pyecombe, Upper Beeding, Washington, Amberley, Cocking, Buriton, Exton and finally Winchester.

There are many views of which way you complete the walk, whether it is Eastbourne to Winchester or Winchester to Eastbourne preferbly the route starting at Winchester seems to be favourable due to the coastal views over Eastbourne as you finish
