The 24 Hour Three Peaks Challenge

So you've decided to attempt the challenge?

Basic info...  due to there being so many organised challenges, each with different rules and routes, I will detail a rough break down of the challenge.

What to expect… the challenge includes a minimum drive time of around 10½ hours, as long as you do not encounter heavy traffic, roadwork’s or navigation errors, this includes shortstops for fuel.

Drive times….. Ben Nevis to Scafell (Wasdale): 5½ hours
Scafell (Wasdale) to Snowdon: 5 hours

A point to remember is this is one of the hardest points of the challenge and would recommend two dedicated drivers as you will clock up around 500+ miles also a point to remember you need to drive to the challenge and then home again so your round trip could be around 1500+ miles or further unless you live on the route.

Hill times….. Ben Nevis - 5 hours
                        Scafell (Wasdale) - 4 hours*
                        Scafell (Seathwaite) - 5 hours*
                        Snowdon - 4 hours

* By starting Scafell Pike at Seathwaite it will reduce your driving time by around 1 hour, but the walk will be about an hour longer! (it is advisable  to start from Wasdale)

The following timings are based on a 24 hour schedule running from north to south, and allow for fatigue as the challenge progresses, you need to be fit as the time scale leaves you  right on the limit of your 24 hour challenge time.

Your team... when planning your challenge you need to take into consideration your location, distance to challenge, distance of challenge and return trip, it may pay to spend a couple of nights near to the start and finish before setting off.

A dedicated driver is invaluable, and is highly recommended, remember they will face hours alone in a car park waiting for you, unless you have a co-driver or companion, and guess what, you now have a support team!

Once you have your chosen team assembled you will now need to train, none of the peaks are particularly hard in themselves, but you need to not only climb one but another and then another with only a few hours rest between them in a car.

Training … this needs to be done together as a team, it is important to build up mountain fitness and in doing so learn each others strengths and weaknesses, as you will need to work together.
Food and drink… this is a must and MUST NOT BE IGNORED! as this could lead to dehydration and exhaustion, whilst on the hill it is important to drink little and often, eating is a must to, chocolate, dried fruit, nuts and sweets are a good way of replacing calories.
When you get back to your ground team it is important that you replace the lost energy that you have just used, you will need a good calorie intake well before you tackle the next hill.

Maps… You will need to be accurate with map reading as you have not got much time to play with and getting lost could make you fail the challenge, it is important to know where you are on the mqap throughout the whole challenge.

Weather… weather conditions can have a huge effect on your times, Scafell Pike involves a certain amount of route finding and navigation in clear weather conditions, so in a mist or in the dark you will need to have some experience, many teams fail because of poor navigation on this peak.
Conditions found at Ben Nevis are often completely different from those encountered a few hours later at Snowdon.
