The Salzkammergut region lies to the south east of Salzburg, it is an area of mountains and lakes ideal for exploring on foot, it is known as the Austrian Lake with its crystal clear lakes, the walking is fairly demanding, starting and finishing with a ferry crossing from St Gilgen. We have put together an idea for a walking holiday in the Salzkammergut region offering fantastic walking with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, more walks in this area will be coming soon. Day 1 - St Wolfgang to Bad Ischl: The walk starts in St Wolfgang today is a easy days walking through meadows, woods and along streams and a small climb that takes you up to the Nussensee in its woodland setting before you descend into the town of Bad Ischl. Day 2 - Bad Ischl to Altaussee: Leaving Bad Ischl you pass through the village of Perneck before climbing up to the high point of the day, the Lambacher Hut at 1432m, whilst decending into Altaussee you are rewarded with wonderful views below. Day 3 - Altaussee to Obertraun: Today is the longest day's walking and takes you to the highest point of the tour, you go up past the Sommersbergsee and then steeply up to the summit of the Hoher Sarstein at 1975m, there is a handrail to help assist you up the steepest section, the climb is steep but not difficult but you will need a head for heights, the summit ridge walk is magnificent with the Dachstein Mountains ahead of you, after all that climbing you are treated to a long decent through the woods to Obertraun on the shore of Hallstättersee, take the ferry across taking you into Hallstatt. Day 4 - Hallstatt to Gosau: You start your day with a steep climb up from the lakeshore allowing lovely views back down over the chalets of Hallstatt, you will pass Salzbergwerk and then it's up through the woods and over the col underneath rocky peaks to descend to Gosau. Day 5 - Gosau to Postalm: On crossing the Gschütt Pass you soon reach the village of Russbach, from here you climb to the Rinnbergalm and then it's a lovely tranquil walk through high alpine meadows to Postalm, 1250m. Day 6 - Postalm to Strobl: Today offers an easy days walking as it is all downhill, taking you through alpine meadows of the Postalm down to the charming village of Strobl on the shore of Wolfgangsee. |
